Mission Statement

MISSION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE BLINN COLLEGE LIBRARY

Mission: To empower students, faculty, and community members to achieve intellectual wellness and provide resources to support academic excellence. 

Purpose Statement: The Blinn College District Library supports teaching and learning, intellectual and professional growth, and the aesthetic and cultural development of Blinn College students, faculty, staff, and community. The Library provides resources, services, and expertise that enriches users’ lives and broadens their horizons.  

Objectives:  In order to fulfill this mission, the library has established the following objectives: 

  • To provide a substantive, relevant and accessible collection of information resources in a variety of formats to support the mission and goals of Blinn College. Including: 

  • Materials and resources to support the curricula in the institution’s programs 

  • Materials and resources to support the faculty in achieving their instructional and professional goals 

  • Materials and resources to provide recreational and personal development opportunities for faculty and students 

  • Materials and resources for the use of adult citizens in improving their business, technical, professional, cultural or social skills and knowledge 

  • Materials and resources relating to the history of Texas, Washington and nearby counties, and Blinn College 

  • To support a climate of intellectual inquiry and growth by providing materials and information resources that reflect varying viewpoints on artistic, philosophical, political, religious, and social issues, including materials/resources which may be controversial  

  • To provide access to information resources through systematic and accurate organization, circulation and delivery services, and discovery tools  

  • To provide instruction and guidance in information literacy, the research process, and the use of information resources, materials, and services, using a variety of formats and modes of delivery  

  • To collaborate with the teaching faculty in the selection and use of library resources, services, and instruction  

  • To provide adequate physical facilities and equipment for housing, servicing, delivery, and use of information resources and materials  

  • To provide adequate space and comfortable accommodations for students to study individually and collaborate with each other in learning communities  

Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright is a form of protection provided  to authors by the laws of the United States. (Title 17, U.S. Code).  Under the “fair use” rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author’s work without asking permission.  The links below will offer more information about copyright and fair use guidelines.

Collection Development Policy

Arrangement of collection

  • Non-fiction books are shelved in open stacks using Dewey Decimal Classification.
  • Fiction, biography, short stories and audiovisuals are in separately marked locations. 
  • Current paper issues of periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title in open stacks; microform issues are filed alphabetically in file cabinets.

Dewey Decimal System


To locate an item in the library refer to its call number. The call numbers are based on the Dewey Decimal System which organizes subjects into 10 broad areas, which are subdivided further into smaller topics. Here is a list of the Dewey Decimal System's 10 subject areas.

Audiovisual materials

The online catalog (SABER) is used to locate books and electronic resources in all libraries and availble online, including interlibrary loan avaiable resources worldwide. Periodical (Newspapers, Magazines, Scholarly Journals, etc.) articles are accessed through SABER and by searching individual library databases. Materials from other Blinn College libraries are available through delivery.

The library also provides study tables, photocopiers, microform readers and printers, and some audiovisual equipment. The library is maintained as a quiet room for individual research and study. Tobacco products, food and drinks in open containers are not allowed in the library. Use of cell phones is prohibited in the library.
