How Do I Locate Books, DVDs, and Audiobooks in the Library?

Dewey Decimal System


To locate an item in the library refer to its call number. The call numbers are based on the Dewey Decimal System which organizes subjects into 10 broad areas, which are subdivided further into smaller topics. Here is a list of the Dewey Decimal System's 10 subject areas.

000 General Knowledge

Almanacs, Encyclopedias, Libraries, Museums, Newspapers ...

100 Psychology and Philosophy

Death & Dying, Ethics, Feelings, Logic, Making Friends, Optical Illusions, Superstitions ...

200 Religions and Mythology

Amish, Bible Stories, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Quakers, Shakers ...

Other areas of the Library:

If the call number begins with R that is a Reference item.  Reference items include encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and more.  Reference items cannot be checked out, they must be used in the library.

If the call number begins with G that is a graphic novel and will be found in the graphic novel section. 

If the call number begins with F that is a fiction item and will be found in the fiction section.

If the call number begins with PB that is a paperback item and will be found on one of the paper back racks.

If the call number begins with B that is a biography and will be found in the biography section.

If the call number begins with CD that item is an audio book and will be found in the audiovisual section.

If the call number begins with DVD that item is a DVD and will be found in the audiovisual section.

How Do I Borrow and Renew Library Materials?

The following is the borrowing policy for Blinn College students, faculty and staff:

Library Cards:

Students must present a valid Blinn College ID card to borrow any materials, including reserves.
Faculty members must present a valid Blinn College ID in order to borrow materials.

Materials may be borrowed for the following lengths of time:

Fines and Charges:

Students pay $ .25 per day per book to a maximum of $10.00 per book. Students are responsible for charges for lost or damaged materials.
Faculty members are not charged overdue fines, but are expected to return materials promptly. Faculty members are responsible for charges for lost or damaged materials.

Renew the items you have checked out online, in person, or by phone.

How Do I Borrow Items from a Different Library?

If Blinn library does not have a item you need, it is possible to borrow a book or article from another library.  If you plan on using this service, please allow up to two weeks for delivery.

Patrons eligible for ILL service include:

  • Blinn College Faculty members
  • Blinn College staff
  • Blinn College students currently enrolled in classes

Blinn Alumni, special card holders (Texshare, Community, etc.), and members of the general public are NOT eligible for ILL services. These users may apply for ILL services at the institutions with which they are affiliated or at their public library.

How do I obtain a Library card?

Your Blinn ID is your library card.  IDs can be obtained through enrollment services - check the instructions in your MyBLINN portal.

Does the library have my textbook?

The Brenham, Bryan, and RELLIS libraries carry a selection of textbooks. We do not carry all textbooks, only the ones that instructors give to us. You can look by class, instructor or title of the books and see if we carry it by doing a reserves search using the link below.

Please note that all textbooks and study materials from instructors are on reserve which means they check out for 2 hours and can not leave the library. Copiers and scanners are available.

Please contact the library if you have materials that are due but you are under a quarantine order.
