What is Evidence Based Practice?

From the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine

Evidence-based practice is the process by which health care providers incorporate the best research or evidence into clinical practice, and combine that with clinical expertise and within the context of patient values.

In general, six tasks are involved in evidence-based practice. They are:

  1. identifying a problem

  2. researching the literature

  3. critiquing the evidence

  4. formulating recommendations

  5. implementing practice changes

  6. evaluation

Evidence Based Dentistry (from the American Dental Association)

The ADA defines the term evidence-based dentistry as an approach to oral health care that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient’s oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist’s clinical expertise and the patient’s treatment needs and preferences.
